Course Introduction

Course Overview

The course is divided into four parts, each with a specific objective and duration:

Part One: Health & Community

Objective: Be able to recall some of the diversity, complexity and sophistication of Aboriginal societies before colonisation.

Content: Examines the attitude of First Nations Australians towards Health & Community.

Duration: Approximately 35 minutes

Part Two: The Poverty Cycle as a Phenomenon

Objective: The poverty cycle phenomenon and how it was institutionalised in First Nations Australian Communities.

Content: Explains how and why the poverty cycle is a phenomenon in a First Nation Australians community context. The impact on culture and the implication on community and family health.

Duration: Approximately 20 minutes

Part Three: The International experience of the poverty cycle

Objective: Examines the international experience of the poverty cycle and demonstrate First Nations Australians are responding like any other human being similarly circumstanced.

Content: Examines videos from the USA, Canada, and New Zealand on how the poverty cycle on a number of levels operates internationally and applies the experience to a First Nations Australians context.

Duration: Approximately 60 minutes

Part Four: How the poverty cycle operates in a First Nations Australian community context.

Objective: Examines how the poverty cycle operates in a First Nations Australian community context, apply Maslow Hierarchy of Needs to a First Nations Australian Community context and share solutions and lessons learned from two trial sites.

Content: Examines using life examples how the poverty cycle operates in a First Nations Community context. How the principals of Maslow Hierarchy of Needs apply to a First Nations Australian community context and the application of lessons learned to two trial sites.

Duration: Approximately 10 minutes
